Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton may be facing additional scrutiny from Republican lawmakers concerning her tenure at the State Department, which could mean that she's facing investigations until Election Day in 2016, Politico is reporting.

Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, who is head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Wednesday that he will keep one of President Barack Obama's State Department nominees from being approved until he gets better answers from the administration about the employment of long-time Clinton aide Huma Abedin.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz is reportedly planning to follow up on claims that several Clinton's aides also used private email addresses for official business while working for the State Department.

There are also investigations by committees in both the House and Senate that are waiting to hear back from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is investigating security breaches that may have occurred due to Clinton's use of a private email server during her time as the nation's top diplomat.

In addition, House Speaker John Boehner has said that he may consider an additional offshoot investigation into Clinton after the Benghazi investigation is over.

Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, who is head of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee, told Politico that "as chairman of the committee, I have a responsibility to look into this."

Democrats view the probes as a political attack on their top candidate for president.

"It’s election season, and congressional Republicans are running the same series of plays, just on a different field," Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill told Politico. "It’s not surprising, but it is disappointing."
