Lawmakers must use Brexit as an opportunity, according to Henry Kissinger. The former secretary of state for presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford weighed in on the Brexit vote in a Wall Street Journal editorial.

"Anguish or recrimination" is not a worthwhile attitude about Britain's vote to exit the European Union, said Kissinger, but instead, lawmakers should look to it as a chance to look at Britain's role as leaders of European cooperation.

"Britain and Europe together must consider how they might return, at least partially, to their historical role as shapers of international order," Kissinger wrote.

The former secretary of state insisted that Europe should address its problems with immigration and other issues head on. "In this manner, the Leave vote can serve as a catharsis," he wrote.

European countries today must look past their own internal issues and focus their attention outward, which involves sacrifice, Kissinger said.

"A better future cannot be reached without some sacrifice of the present. A society reluctant to accept this verity stagnates and, over the decades, consumes its substance," Kissinger wrote.

The veteran diplomat added that the European Union faces new challenges that, along with its allies, must be met with "a common act of imagination."

The alliance between Britain and the United States is valuable to the world and they must continue to work together, Kissinger said.

"That special relationship is needed for the Atlantic world to traverse the present crisis," according to Kissinger. He added, "To inspire the confidence of the world, Europe and America must demonstrate confidence in themselves."
