Texas Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar Wednesday took a page from GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump's playbook, saying he believes the United States needs to enforce the immigration laws it already has while making them stronger, and calling for officials to "properly vet" refugees.

"Just to let people in just because you want to fill a number, I think that's wrong," Cuellar told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program. "I believe in the immigration laws we have. We have to make them stronger. But we have to enforce those laws. If we're going to let people in, we have to properly vet them.

"That's why some time ago I voted with my friend, Congressman [Michael] McCaul (R-Texas) to make sure we're talking about refugees, we got to make sure we verify and certify the people coming in are not a threat to us in any way or form."

Vetting is important, he continued, as it only takes one time for someone to cause a great deal of damage.

"That's why law enforcement and people who go through the vetting have to be correct 100 percent of the time," said Cuellar. "If we let refugees in, we got to make sure that we properly vet them. All it takes is just one individual. We know what sort of damage that can cause to us."

The lawmaker also discussed the case of suspected New York City bomber Ahmad Rahami, saying he's concerned that political correctness may be keeping law enforcement officials from doing their jobs.

Rahami's father told the FBI two years ago he suspected his son had become a terrorist. In addition, Rahami had traveled to both Afghanistan and Pakistan several times. The FBI reviewed the father's accusation, but later dropped the probe when he recanted his statements, and an official said the father made the claims because he was angry with his son.

"I'll say this very carefully," said Cuellar. "PC cannot stand in the way of law enforcement doing its job. We have to make sure that we let the men and women do their jobs. We got to make sure the law enforcement, FBI, that they do their jobs.

"Unfortunately, PC does get in the way sometimes. I want to be respectful of religion of cultures, but at the same time law enforcement has to do its job."

Cuellar on Wednesday also called for the government to ensure Border Patrol guards have the "right resources" to do their jobs and keep "bad people from coming into our country."

"A couple of days ago, I was talking to one of my friends at Border Patrol," he said. "One of the things we're seeing, they stop them and then after a while, the administration says they're doing a better job at quote, manage processing.

"What does that mean? That means they can handle the folks coming in, but then they give them a notice to appear and you know that in three or four, five years, they might show up in court, they might not. "
