Sen. Heidi Heitkamp: Dakota Pipeline Fight 'Not Winnable'

("Squawk Box")

The Dakota Access oil pipeline will be completed under Donald Trump's administration, and the fight to reroute the pipeline by the Standing Rock Sioux and environmental groups was "not winnable," North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp said Monday.

"When you look at it, we know one thing for sure: When the administration changes, the easement is going to be approved," the Democratic senator told CNBC's "Squawk Box," referring to the legal ability that the pipeline's supporters are saying justifies building on Native American lands.

"I understand the frustration of the protesters. I just think that this fight is not winnable," she added.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denied approving permits that would complete the $3.7 billion, 1,172-mile project, according to CNBC.

Following the announcement, Valley News Live reported that Heitkamp released a statement calling on the administration to make a final decision.

"Today's move doesn't actually bring finality to the project," she said, and her prime concern is the safety of the protesters, noting that North Dakota's winter has arrived.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Heitkamp met with President-elect Donald Trump Friday afternoon amid rumors she was up for a Cabinet position.

"We spent a lot of time talking about economic development, talking about energy, talking about regulation and what we need to do there, so it really was a very substantive discussion without a lot of details on positions in the Cabinet," she said about the meeting.

Trump's transition team said his support for the pipeline has nothing to do with his ownership stake in Energy Transfer Partners, the company building the pipeline, according to Reuters.
