General Michael Hayden's new book about his time as director of the CIA and the National Security Agency has made The New York Times best-seller lists in its first week of release.

"Playing to the Edge: American Intelligence in the Age of Terror," recounts Hayden's experiences heading intelligence agencies in the final years of the George W. Bush administration.

It is currently No. 4 on the Hardcover Nonfiction list, No. 5 on the Combined Print & E-book Nonfiction list, and No. 1 in the Espionage category.

The book focuses on how American intelligence responded to terrorism, a major war, and the most sweeping technological revolution in the last 500 years, according to Penguin Press. It looks at what the NSA was before the 9/11 attacks and why it began its controversial terrorist surveillance program.

"There is a story here that deserves to be told, without varnish and without spin," Hayden said of the book which, he said, he wrote for "that slice of the American population who depend on and appreciate intelligence, but who do not have the time to master its many obscure characteristics."
