5,000 Non-Citizens Voted in Colorado Election

By Newsmax Wires   |   Thursday, 31 Mar 2011 07:36 PM

The state of Colorado knows non-citizens are voting in its elections, they just don’t know how many, The Hill reports.

And that’s a “disturbing wake-up call” that should be the catalyst for every state in the country to review its voter registration records, says Rep. Gregg Harper of Mississippi, the chairman of the House Administration Committee, which heard testimony from Colorado officials.

A recent study in Colorado found as many as 5,000 non-citizens in the state took part in last year’s election, according to The Hill.

“We simply cannot have an electoral system that allows thousands of non-citizens to violate the law and vote in our elections,” Harper said as his committee called for a national review. “We must do more to protect the integrity of our electoral processes.”

Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler, a Republican, told the panel his state knew that about 5,000 illegal voters took part in last year’s election. The study compared a voter registration database with driver’s license records.

“We know we have a problem here. We don’t know the size of it,” Gessler said.
