Republicans Threaten to Subpoena Benghazi Survivors

By    |   Thursday, 14 Mar 2013 11:08 AM

Republicans are threatening to subpoena survivors of the Benghazi attack to testify before Congress unless the White House provides more answers about the assault on the U.S. consulate in Libya that left four Americans dead.

According to The Hill, they also are threatening to delay the confirmation of Deborah Jones, President Barack Obama's nominee to replace the late U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, who was killed during the Sept. 11, 2012 attack.

Republican lawmakers have been demanding the White House provide Congress access to seven U.S. survivors being treated at Walter Reed Hospital. Reports have recently surfaced that as many as 30 Americans were wounded in the attack.

On March 1, Republican Reps. Frank Wolf of Virginia and Jim Gerlach of Pennsylvania wrote Secretary of State John Kerry a letter demanding the contact information and names of each survivor. Wolf, who has introduced a House resolution calling for a congressional investigation of the Benghazi attack, said Wednesday that the survivors of the attack should be acknowledged and that any who are CIA operatives could be honored discreetly.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham is also drafting a letter to Kerry seeking access to the survivors and FBI records of their accounts, The Hill reported Thursday. Graham told the newspaper that it's disappointing that Republicans may have to force the survivors to appear before Congress, but he insisted the story “has to be told.”

Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that holding up Jones' confirmation may be "the only vehicle we can use to get the answers” Republicans are seeking.

Democrats, though, say Republicans are trying to use the issue to gain political points.

“Benghazi is over and done with,” said West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a senior member on the Intelligence Committee. “As far as [Republicans] are concerned ... this has always been a political issue and that is the way they will continue to [pursue] it.”
