Rep. Hurd: Democrats Blocking Vital Defense Spending Bill

By    |   Saturday, 04 Jul 2015 09:28 AM

America's military deserves "unwavering support on Independence Day and every other day," Rep. Will Hurd said in Saturday's GOP address, but Congressional Democrats are trying to block a vital military funding bill.

The House this year has already passed measures to provide mental health resources for veterans, as well to bolster cybersecurity, the Texas Republican said, and last month passed a strong national defense bill that meets President Barack Obama's funding requests while authorizing a "much deserved pay raise for our troops."

However, there are members of the president's party trying to block the measure, said Hurd, and "they think that by playing political games, they can extract more funding for unrelated federal agencies like the IRS and the EPA."

Last month, Democrats blocked the fiscal 2016 defense spending bill in the U.S. Senate as part of a campaign to force majority Republicans to start budget negotiations. The 50-45 vote was short of the 60-vote majority that was needed to advance the bill, with all but one member of the Democratic caucus opposing the measure.

Hurd said Saturday that he hopes the bill's opponents will reconsider their stance, as there is "too much at stake right now to let our differences get in the way of our work to protect freedom."

"America’s men and women who serve our country make up the greatest force for good this world has ever known," said the lawmaker, who before being elected spent almost a decade as an undercover CIA case officer in the Middle East and South Asia. "I witnessed folks struggling for freedom overseas. And I saw firsthand why we can never take our liberty for granted."

The United States' enemies are "more determined than ever," said Herd. "They have no intention of giving up their pursuit of nuclear weapons, or the violence, fear, and hate they use to cling to power. Our principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness — they represent everything our enemies want to destroy."

The United States is a country where "you can work hard and be anything you want to be," said Hurd, who also wished the U.S. women's soccer team luck in the upcoming World Cup final.

Herd, a freshman Representative elected in 2014, sits on the Committee on Homeland Security and chairs the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s Information Technology Subcommittee.
