NY Times: George W. Bush Was Not Cropped Out of Photo

The New York Times has been blasted for running a front page photograph on Sunday of the 50th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday" in Selma, Alabama, prominently featuring President Barack Obama and his family leading the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, but omitting former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, who were marching with them.

Republicans criticized the Times, which insisted they had not cropped Bush out of the photo, but, according to the photographer who shot the picture, conservatives should be blaming something else — the glaring Alabama sun.

Times photographer Doug Mills, in an email sent to the Times, said, "As you can see, Bush was in the bright sunlight. I did not even send this frame because it’s very wide and super busy and Bush is super-overexposed because he was in the sun and Obama and the others are in the shade," The Hill reported.

Margaret Sullivan, public editor for the Times, wrote that ranking photo editor Michele McNally insisted, "There was no crop. This was the photo as we received it."

Sullivan wrote of the shot with Bush in it, "Technically, it’s a bad picture," while the photo that ran "has impact."

She added, "While it would have been moving and worthwhile to see both presidents in a front-page photograph, I see no evidence of politics in the handling or presentation of the photo."

However, Fox News noted, the official White House photograph of the event did the same thing, prominently featuring Obama and family and cropping out George and Laura Bush, although the caption does mention that the Bush's were there.
