Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush has announced his support for Republican nominee Donald Trump, The Texas Tribune reports.

Bush, the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who ran against Trump in the primaries, told Texas Republican activists over the weekend that it was time to set aside any remaining animosity toward Trump and support the GOP nominee.

He was speaking at the event as the state's GOP victory chairman, whose job it is to oversee the Republican statewide election campaign.

Bush had been criticized for taking the position while remaining one of the most prominent elected officials in Texas who had not yet stated his support for Trump.

"From Team Bush, it's a bitter pill to swallow, but you know what? You get back up and you help the man that won, and you make sure that we stop Hillary Clinton," Bush said, in a video posted by a member of the audience.

The most prominent members of the Bush family, including his father and former presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush, have all refused to support Trump.

CNN speculated that George P. Bush might be trying to increase his relevancy as he has reportedly expressed ambitions for the national stage.

Commentators also pointed out that Bush, who speaks fluent Spanish, is partly Hispanic, as his mother is a naturalized citizen who was born in Mexico. That could be of some importance for Trump, who has not polled well among that ethnic group for his views on immigration and for his pledge to build a wall on the Mexican border.

Back in May, Bush told AP that Trump "has the ability to win us over if he clarifies many of his remarks and he demonstrates that he has humility and that he doesn't besmirch peoples' character as the motivating factor for why he's running for office."

The Dallas Morning News reported that after exiting the presidential primaries, Jeb Bush endorsed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a friend of George P. Bush, but George P. did not do so.

Attempt to reach George P. Bush for further comment following his endorsement of Trump were unsuccessful.
