North Korea was the least favorable country among Americans in the annual Gallup poll released on Monday, while Canada and Great Britain topped the list.

Only 11 percent of Americans gave North Korea a favorable rating, last on the list of 21 countries Gallup rated and just above the 12 percent favorable rating given to Iran.

Those surveyed were asked to give their perception of each country according to one of the following four categories: very favorable, mostly favorable, mostly unfavorable and very unfavorable.

Other results from the poll show:

  • Canada topped the list with a total favorable rating of 92 percent, followed closely by Great Britain with 91 percent.
  • Israel was third overall in the very favorable category at 29 percent (second only to Canada at 50 and Great Britain at 43) but was dragged down to eighth place overall due to a mostly unfavorable rating of 21, making it the only country with an above 20 rating in both of those categories.
  • For the first time Cuba climbed into the favorable rating above 50 percent, a dramatic increase from the 10 percent favorability it enjoyed in 1996, the 21 percent in 2006 and the 34 percent favorability it had just three years ago.
  • Russia is in the bottom half of the list with only a 28 percent favorable rating, with 70 percent considering it unfavorable.
  • Rounding out the top five for favorability after Canada and Great Britain were Japan (85 percent), France (83 percent) and Germany (82 percent).

Results of the poll are based on telephone interviews conducted Feb. 1-5, with a random sample of 1,035 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

For results based on the total sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
