Though up 7 points since last year, just 27 percent of Americans have confidence in newspapers, according to the latest Gallup poll released Wednesday.

Newspapers recorded a record low 20 percent confidence rating in 2016, making the 7-point jump the highest of any institution in Gallup's survey.

The results, according to Gallup:

  • The 27 percent confidence in newspapers is the highest since 2011.
  • 24 percent of Americans have high confidence in TV news.
  • 16 percent have high confidence in news on the Internet.
  • 13 percent of Republicans have confidence in newspapers, down 3 points from last year.
  • 46 percent of Democrats have confidence in newspapers, up an astounding 18 points year over year.

Americans in 1990 had a record high 39 percent confidence in newspapers, according to Gallup.

"Despite recent discussion about 'fake news' and suspicions about the motivations of newspapers, as well as TV and Internet news, Americans' confidence in these institutions has been soft for a long time," Gallup's Art Swift writes.

"The low readings for these media institutions may be happening because of the sheer volume of media now.

"When there were only a few major national newspapers, a select number of local newspapers and even fewer television news channels, Americans may have found it easier to trust these institutions. Now, there is an abundance of Internet news sites that attempt to increase traffic by appealing to only one side of the political spectrum or the other."

Results for this poll are based on telephone interviews conducted June 7-11 with a random sample of 1,009 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

For results based on the total sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
