Franklin Graham has blasted Canada's decision to pay a whopping $8 million to an al-Qaida terrorist guilty of war crimes after a court ruled his rights had been abused while in custody.

"We have many friends in Canada and love the Canadian people. They are our neighbors and have been our closest allies," Graham, president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, said on his Facebook page.

"As an American, I am shocked and hurt by the action Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has taken to award millions of dollars to someone who was a member of al-Qaida and killed an American soldier and blinded another.

"I'm stunned, as I think a lot of others are as well. Why would Prime Minister Trudeau do such a thing? Does this disturb you like it disturbs me?"

Trudeau's government approved the payment, as well as an apology, to Omar Khadr, who in 2010 pled guilty to killing U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Christopher Speer with a hand grenade.

That same year, a 2010 Supreme Court of Canada ruled Canadian officials violated Khadr's rights at Guantanamo.

Trudeau's decision has created a "backlash among Canadian taxpayers and Canadian soldiers and veterans that has been fierce," Pierre Poilievre, a member of the Canadian House of Commons, told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

The prime minister defended the payout, according to CBC News, saying Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects all Canadians "even when it is uncomfortable … this is not about the details or merits of the Khadr case. When the government violates any Canadian's Charter rights we all end up paying for it."
