Islamist insurgents staged a daring guerrilla-style attack in the northern Mali city of Gao yesterday, raising major questions about the capabilities of the Malian and regional African troops and also calling into question whether France will be able to withdraw next month as planned. If French troops leave and the Islamists regain control of northern Mali, it would be a significant embarrassment for Paris.
