Report: Rand Paul Skips Most Foreign Relations Panel Hearings

By    |   Wednesday, 22 Apr 2015 07:11 PM

Sen. Rand Paul has skipped most Foreign Relations Committee hearings since 2014, a review by BuzzFeed finds.

The website says that Paul – a Kentucky Republican who is running for president – has skipped the overwhelming majority of hearings in recent years even as his website calls national security and foreign policy among "the primary functions of the federal government."

Based on videos and publicly available hearing transcripts, Buzzfeed said Paul's attendance on the full committee and the subcommittees he serves on "was only verifiable at 15 of 94 hearings since 2014."

Buzzfeed previously reported that Paul had attended just five out of 73 Homeland Security Committee hearings during that same period.

An aide to Paul responded that the freshman senator "is one of the most active members" of that chamber, adding: "In that same time frame, he has made more than 98 percent of the votes in the Senate and authored more than 50 bills and amendments, all the while maintaining a full schedule of meetings with Kentuckians in his office."

When constituent meetings conflict with his Senate duties, Paul "has chosen to spend his time hearing the thoughts of Kentuckians, and will subsequently receive a full report of pertinent information that was missed from staff in attendance at the meeting," the aide said.

Non-attendance at committee hearings is frequently brought up by media outlets and by politicians seeking to portray their rivals as inattentive or disinterested in a particular issue. Foreign policy has become a particular focus of late, with the rise of ISIS and increasingly aggressive behavior by Iran, China and Russia.

One of Paul's rivals in the Republican presidential sweepstakes, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, for example, is coming under fire after Politico reported that he had skipped most Armed Services Committee hearings since coming to Washington in 2013 and had below-par attendance for two other major committees on which he serves.

At least two incumbent Democratic senators defeated for re-election last year – Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Mark Udall of Colorado – also came under heavy fire for non-attendance at Armed Services Committee hearings.
