Court records show that the Turkish man who provided Michael Flynn with a $600,000 lobbying deal just before President Donald Trump picked him to be national security adviser has business ties to Russia, Politico reported on Tuesday.

The man, Ekim Alptekin, has been involved in Turkish lobbying in the United States with Dmitri Zaikin, a former executive in Russian companies who also has had dealings with Russian President Vladimir Putin's government, according to three sources.

This previously unknown partnership raises questions about the agenda of the two men, as well as the source of the funds used to pay the lobbyists, especially since Turkish President Recep Tayyip has become increasingly friendly with Putin, Politico reported.

It also might complicate the White House's efforts to distance itself from the FBI probe into whether members of the Trump campaign coordinated with Russian agents.

This is particularly so because Alptekin hired Flynn at a time when Flynn was working for Trump's campaign and Putin's government was under investigation for interfering with the American election.

Flynn said he depended on assurances from Alptekin that he was not funded by a foreign government, although Flynn has changed his explanations several times concerning facts about this issue since the scandal broke.

A White House spokesman declined to comment on the reports.

Fox News reported that congressmen on the House Oversight Committee are to view classified documents on Tuesday related to Flynn's foreign contacts, which will be provided by the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Flynn headed the agency from 2012 to 2014.
