Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani squashed rumors he could be the next FBI director.

"I'm not a candidate for FBI director," Giuliani told New York Magazine and The Atlantic late Tuesday night at Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. "The president's not gonna ask me, and I'm not gonna be FBI director."

Giuliani's name has been tossed around as a potential successor to former director James Comey, who was fired Tuesday by President Donald Trump. And although New York Magazine confirmed with someone close to Trump that Giuliani was a candidate for the job, the former mayor said he would not take it.

Giuliani said he was in town to brief people in the White House about cybersecurity in the private sector, a task he was given by Trump.

Newsmax's John Gizzi reported Tuesday night Giuliani was one of several people that could potentially lead the FBI moving forward.

Comey told members of the Senate Judiciary Committee last week the FBI was looking into claims someone may have leaked information about the FBI's Hillary Clinton email investigation to Giuliani during the 2016 presidential campaign, during which he stumped for Trump.
