Rick Warren, SBC's Moore Decry Sexual Revolution at Vatican Conference

The sexual revolution is destroying the institution of marriage — and the church "cannot cower in silence," prominent evangelicals Russell Moore and Rick Warren told a Vatican conference of religious leaders from around the globe.

Moore, the Southern Baptist ethicist, told the Vatican City gathering Tuesday that sexual liberation had created "a culture obsessed with sex" that had simply led to a “boredom of sex shorn of mystery," Religion News Service reports.

"Western culture now celebrates casual sexuality, cohabitation, no-fault divorce, family redefinition and abortion right as part of a sexual revolution that can tear down old patriarchal systems," Moore said at the conference convened by Pope Francis.

The sexual revolution, he said, appears to have imposed a new patriarchy that enabled men to "pursue a Darwinian fantasy of the predatory alpha male" for the pursuit of "power, prestige and personal pleasure."

"Does anyone really believe these things will empower women and children?" he asked.

"We see the wreckage of sexuality as self-expression all around us, and we will see more yet."

Megachurch pastor Warren of California’s Saddleback Church decried that marriage is being "ridiculed, resented, rejected and even redefined" —  and said it's time for the church to be a "proponent of what’s right."

"The church cannot cower in silence," Warren told the conference, Religion News Service reports. "There is too much at stake."

Warren told the Christian Post he intended to focus his message on action steps for the church.

"In many ways, the debate over the definition of life, of sex, and of marriage is, in reality, a question of leadership," Warren told the Christian Post. "Who is going to lead? Will the church follow the crowd, or will the church lead the crowd?"

"The church cannot be salt and light in a crumbling culture if it caves in to the sexual revolution and fails to provide a counter-culture witness," he added.

On Monday, Pope Francis told the conference that marriage is by definition a union of man and woman, defying claims the Church was considering a change in its views on same-sex unions and sexuality.

The Vatican City gathering follows by weeks the Bishops’ Synod on the Family, which was meant to welcome nontraditional families. But in a final synod report, a more welcoming approach to gay and lesbian Catholics was scaled back, the National Catholic Register reports.
