Veteran Newsman Sam Donaldson Arrested for DUI

By Bill Hoffmann   |   Thursday, 20 Dec 2012 11:56 AM

Veteran ABC newsman Sam Donaldson was arrested for driving under the influence earlier this month, TMZ.com reports.

The 78-year-old journalist, who served as the network’s White House correspondent twice, was pulled over by cops in Lewes, Delaware after he had driven onto the shoulder of the road.

An officer “detected the presence of alcohol and decided to perform a field sobriety test,’’ TMZ said. “Donaldson was eventually arrested for DUI and was taken to a nearby station where he was booked and released.‘’

Donaldson, who will be arraigned Friday, was said to very cooperative during the incident.

Aside from his stints at the White House from 1977-1989 and 1998-1999, Donaldson also co-hosted "PrimeTime Live" with Diane Sawyer and the "This Week with Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts."

The newsman famously jousted with President George W. Bush during a White House press conference in 2006.

“Is that Sam Donaldson? Forget it, you're a 'has-been'! We don't have to answer has-beens' questions,’’ Bush joked, prompting Donaldson to fire back with, "Better to have been a has-been than a never-was."
