Billionaire real estate businessman Donald Trump thinks "in many ways" it's harder building a successful business than being president.

In an interview with GQ magazine posted Wednesday, the front-running Republican presidential contender says business and making deals are a "big part" of the important qualities the nation's commander-in-chief must have.

"You know, I built over a ten-billion-dollar net worth, I've had tremendous success," he tells the magazine. "I mean, you're sitting in a building that, frankly, nobody would have ever thought coming out of Brooklyn I was gonna own this building. I built it. I've had great success.

"I don't think it's going to be that much different — in fact I think in many ways building a great business is actually harder."

But Trump demurs when asked to name some business leaders who've gone onto becoming political leaders.

"There are examples, but I don't want to do that because they've also had some controversy and I don't want to be dragged into their controversy — I want to start with a clean slate," he said.

Trump also believes he's handled the barbs of his critics "very well."

"You know, if I do something wrong, and let's say you write a story and you're saying what I did wrong, I don't have a problem with that," he says. "When I do good things and you write that I do bad things, that I have a problem with. And then we fight back. We fight you, we fight everybody."

But he declares "I haven't done much wrong," conceding "but I never talk about what I do wrong."

"I don't like to," he adds. "If I make a mistake, which everyone is entitled to, every once in a while, I know I've made a mistake and I correct it for the next time. But I don't talk about it."

The candidate notes world events today are akin to "a tale of two cities."

"You have wonderful, beautiful things happening in the world, but you also have horrible, horrible things that you wouldn't have thought would have happened in this day and age," he says.

"You think in terms of the medieval times, with heads being chopped off. I mean, it's like medieval times. We're living in a barbaric time … All you have to do is turn on television for one night and you'll see the news and you'll say, 'He's right.' "

Trump also says he believes in heaven — and hopes he's going there.

"That's what I strive for," he said, responding to a follow-up on how it's going so far: "Pretty good."
