Each deportation executed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2016 cost taxpayers $10,854, CNN reported.

In all, ICE spent $3.2 billion handling the 240,000 deportation cases in 2016.

Customs and Border Control handled the other 210,000 deportations.

President Donald Trump has said he wants to deport 2 million to 3 million criminal undocumented immigrants.

The breakdown of costs incurred by ICE in 2016, according to CNN:

  • $129.4 million to identify and apprehend.
  • $345 million for detention.
  • Legal processing: range of $1,200 to 1,500 per case.
  • Nearly $2,000 in transportation per case.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday said the government will add 50 immigration judges this year and another 75 next year to better handle the rising caseloads.

It's also part of the Trump era of stricter prosecution for illegal immigration, Sessions said.
