Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday called on Attorney General Loretta Lynch to investigate a $25,000 donation from the Trump Foundation to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi regarding complaints against the candidate and Trump University.

"It has been reported that Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi personally solicited a political contribution from Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump while her office deliberated joining an investigation of fraud at Trump University," said the letter to Lynchsigned by the Michigan Rep. John Conyers Jr. and by the committee's 15 other Democrats.

"After receiving these funds, Mrs. Bondi declined to further investigate Mr. Trump's business interests," the letter said. "This fact pattern indicates that these payments may have influenced Mrs. Bondi's official decision not to participate in litigation against Mr. Trump.

"A number of criminal statutes would appear to be implicated by this course of conduct," the committee members said.

The contribution came from a Trump family foundation in apparent violation of rules surrounding political activities by charities, according to news reports.

A political group backing Bondi's re-election, called And Justice for All, reported receiving the check on Sept. 17, 2013 — four days after Bondi's office announced that she was considering joining a New York state investigation of Trump University.

After the check was received, Bondi's office declined to sue Trump, citing insufficient grounds to proceed.

Both Trump and Bondi have denied wrongdoing and have said that the donation was not linked to any favors.

However, the donation has gained new attention after reports that Trump agreed to pay a $2,500 fine to the IRS because he originally gave to Bondi's campaign from the foundation.

The candidate has since refunded the $25,000 to his charity.
