Rep. Chaffetz: Fire DEA Administrator for Agents' Sex Parties

By    |   Tuesday, 14 Apr 2015 07:34 PM

U.S. DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart should be fired in the wake of the sex parties that agents engaged in for the past 14 years, Rep. Jason Chaffetz told CNN on Tuesday.

Chaffetz chairs the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which on Tuesday grilled Leonhart over why Drug Enforcement Agency agents who had attended parties in Colombia paid for by the very drug cartels they were investigating didn't receive more serious punishment than two weeks unpaid leave.

Leonhart said she is "not in the discipline process" and is "very disappointed" in the agents' actions, but added she does not have the authority to fire the agents or revoke their security clearances.

"You have to work with agents over whom you can't discipline and have no control, and you have no control over the security clearance. What the hell do you get to do?" Rep. Trey Gowdy asked Leonhart at the hearing.

Chaffetz, appearing on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," said that Leonhart has been either deputy administrator, acting administrator or the actual administrator of the DEA for more than a decade, so she is accountable for the problems.

"These people went on either between two and 14 days of unpaid leave," Chaffetz said. "That sounds more like a vacation rather than a severe consequence for sexual misconduct and sexual harassment."

One of the agents is accused of throwing a glass at a prostitute as the two argued over payment.

"There are great ramifications to national security here. And who wants to serve with these people who make those kind of judgments?" Chaffetz said. "They're still working at the DEA."

Turning to humanitarian aid for Iraq, Chaffetz told CNN he finds it "increasingly difficult" to support aid unless he can have assurances over how it will be spent.

"We have poured literally hundreds of billions of dollars into Iraq and Afghanistan, into the Middle East. But what kind of results?" he said. "I mean, how many times does the American taxpayer have to fund this? And to what end? And where is that money going?"
