Gen. David Goldfein, Air Force chief of staff, vowed for the U.S. to stand with NATO, reaffirming "the strongest alliance on the planet," the Washington Examiner reports.

"We stand with you. This is the strongest alliance on the planet and we have stood with you before as you have stood with us and we will stand with you in the future," Goldfein said at the Air Force Association's Air Space and Cyber conference, thanking NATO air chiefs for coming out to National Harbor, Maryland.

Republican candidate Donald Trump said that as president, he would only aid NATO partners who met their financial obligations to the alliance, and later that he would leave NATO if other countries don't pay.

"There's nothing wrong with saying that a concept was good, but now it's obsolete or now it's outmoded," Trump said last March.

"NATO has played an instrumental role in Afghanistan and helping the Afghan government and the Afghan security forces to restore decency and some stability to that country. We are working with NATO now on strengthening the deterrence of Russia," Defense Secretary Ash Carter said at U.S. Central Command headquarters in Tampa that month.

"There is a lot that NATO has done and is doing," he added.

According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in June, the alliance is "as relevant as ever," but he did not address the ongoing election in the United States, or how that could impact NATO.
