Singer Cyndi Lauper on Friday called Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, her hero during a concert in Bangor, Maine, the Press Herald reports.

Collins was attending Lauper's concert at Darling's Waterfront Pavilion when Lauper told her to come up on stage.

"This woman is a hero. And she's my hero," Lauper told the crowd. "And she’s a Republican."

Lauper, a longtime lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth rights activist who has pushed Congress to protect homeless teens, lauded Collins for her work with LGBT homeless youth.

Lauper in 2015 testified before a Senate subcommittee about youth homelessness, a problem she faced when she was younger, and later co-founded the True Colors Fund to address homeless issues. Congress then passed a spending bill designating $52.5 million in new funding for work on the issue a year later.

Collins told WSCH-TV Saturday she was "deeply" touched that Lauper said she was her "hero," and then talked about her opposition to the most recent version of the Republican-backed health care bill in the Senate.

Lauper has also expressed her disapproval of the bill.
