Robert Kennedy Jr. is standing squarely behind his oldest son who was arrested during a brawl outside a nightclub in Aspen, Colo., early Thursday.

Conor Kennedy — a 22-year-old Harvard University student and grandson of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy — told his father he was defending a gay friend being taunted with homophobic slurs, The Aspen Times reports.

"Conor has always reacted against bullying. I'm happy he stood up for his friend," Kennedy Jr. told The Aspen Times. "I'm very sorry it turned into a police incident."

Kennedy Jr. said Conor had asked a group of four men outside the Bootsy Bellows nightclub to apologize for calling his friend a gay slur earlier in the evening.

One did, but at least two others began taunting again, and Conor asked them to stop. One of the men asked what he was going to do about it, took a swing at Conor, and a melee broke out, Kennedy Jr. explained.

Aspen Police Officer Andy Atkinson said he witnessed Conor grab a man by his shirt and hit him several times with his fists.

As Atkinson tried to restrain him, "Kennedy and I fell back onto the snow bank . . . where Kennedy attempted to pull away from me and stand up," the officer said. "I held onto Kennedy's arms and rolled him over with assistance from a bystander on to his stomach."

Conor reportedly apologized to Atkinson and was charged with disorderly conduct, which carries a punishment of up to a year behind bars.

A history and literature major at Harvard, Conor made news when he was 18 when he reportedly dated pop superstar Taylor Swift.
