The U.S. Coast Guard said it will close a section of the Potomac River when President Donald Trump and other government officials play at one of the president's golf courses along the waterway outside of Washington, D.C.

The Washington Post reports that the closures affect a two-mile stretch of the river where it is adjacent to Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Va.

The policy applies to boats, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and even people fishing along the shoreline opposite the course. It was adapted to keep Trump and other "high-ranking government officials" safe.

The same section of river has already been closed five times since March, the Coast Guard told the Post. The service is now trying to designate the area as a "permanent security zone" that would be closed whenever it's deemed necessary.

Coast Guard spokesperson Lt. Amanda Faulkner told the Post, "In a lot of ways this is better for the public, because they have more information."

Trump was criticized when he was filmed driving a golf cart onto a green at a golf course he owns in New Jersey earlier this year.

Trump, according a recent report, has spent more than 20 percent of his time as president at golf courses.
