WSJ: Clinton Must Take Real Responsibility for Benghazi

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton must accept true responsibility for September’s attack in Benghazi, Libya that killed four Americans, according to a Wall Street Journal editorial.

“Two months ago, she said ‘I take responsibility’ for Libya without ever doing so. It's well past time she did,” Journal editors write.

Clinton was supposed to testify to Congress about the issue Thursday, but on Saturday her spokesman announced that she suffered a concussion after fainting and thus won’t be able to make it.

The secretary sent a letter to House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., saying she regrets not being able to testify now and looks forward to doing so next month.

“By January, however, Mrs. Clinton's likely successor (Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.) will be nominated and probably on his way to confirmation,” the editorial states. “Hill sources say it'll be hard to schedule another hearing and call her back. Congress should insist on it.”

Congressmen must determine “why security was so lacking, why requests for additional protection for the mission were denied, and who made those decisions,” Journal editors maintain.

A new report from the independent Accountability Review Board puts the onus on senior State Department officials. "Systematic failures and leadership and management deficiencies at senior levels within two bureaus of the State Department resulted in a Special Mission security posture that was inadequate for Benghazi and grossly inadequate to deal with the attack that took place," the report said.
