Rep. Chris Collins: Valentine's Day Stifles GOP Flynn Response

CNN's "New Day"

Republicans did not comment Tuesday morning on the resignation of Gen. Michael Flynn as Trump's national security adviser because it is Valentine's Day, according to Rep. Chris Collins.

"It's Valentine's Day, and I guess they're having breakfast with their wives," the New York Republican said Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."

Collins made the statement after "New Day" host Chris Cuomo asked him why Republicans had not commented about Flynn's resignation Thursday night, in which Flynn admitted he did not tell the whole truth after making calls to a Russian ambassador Dec. 29, 2016.

"When you have a man of Flynn's stature resign and say that he misled — maybe even lied — to other members of the White House, why is everybody so quiet?" Cuomo asked.

Collins added praise for Flynn, saying he is a "great American," and "all I can say is that I'm sorry to see Gen. Flynn go."

The congressman also said he was aiming to move past the issue.

"I'm not going to be one, nor would I hope others would dwell on the situation or pile on, to use another term," Rep. Collins said. "I think it's just time to move on, to find the replacement."

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said Tuesday morning on NBC's "Today" that Flynn resigned after admitting he had become a "lightning rod" amid the controversy.
