New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is losing the support of Republicans in his home state, falling into fourth place among GOP presidential contenders, according to a Fairleigh Dickinson University poll.

According to the latest survey, here's how the candidates stack up with Republican respondents:

  • Donald Trump: 31 percent
  • Florida Sen. Marco Rubio: 18 percent
  • Ben Carson: 11 percent
  • New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie: 9 percent

"Governor Christie's blunt approach is clearly facing unexpected competition from Donald Trump," survey director and political science professor Krista Jenkins said in a statement.

"And, to the extent that Christie was considered strong among the so-called 'establishment' candidates, he now has the rising appeal of Rubio to contend with. The people back home are not supporting their governor as much as he might have expected."

On the job approval front, the survey finds 56 percent disapprove of Christie's work as governor; among Republicans, 51 percent approve of the job he's doing, while 37 percent disapprove.
