The prospects of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie getting impeached for his alleged role in the Bridge-gate scandal have gone up now that the trial of two players in the case has begun.

Politico reports that Christie could become the first governor from his state to be impeached. He was allegedly told by two people that two lanes on the George Washington Bridge were closed in order to cause traffic problems in Fort Lee, N.J. in September 2013.

Some say the move was in response to the mayor of Fort Lee's decision not to endorse Christie in the 2013 gubernatorial election.

Christie has long denied any knowledge of the lane closures, which went on for four days. A trial for Port Authority of New York and New Jersey worker Bill Baroni and Christie's Deputy Chief of Staff Bridget Kelly got underway this week.

New Jersey Democrats are keeping close tabs on the trial and what revelations come out of it, with an impeachment of Christie a real possibility.

"They've all told us there will be proof at the trial that the governor knew about this," Assemblyman John Wisniewski told Politico. "We don't know exactly what that proof is."

Christie was one of 17 Republicans to run for president in the current election cycle but he dropped out of the race in February and endorsed Donald Trump, who is now the party's nominee.

Christie has been a close adviser to Trump ever since and was even a potential running mate.

If Christie were to be removed from office, New Jersey Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno would take over.
