Secret Report: US Spy Agencies Ignored China, Mideast Threats

A secret White House report has concluded that America’s top spy agencies are not paying nearly enough attention to national security hot spots like China and the Middle East and that the country’s vast intelligence resources need to be refocused.

The report by the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board also concludes that spy agencies like the CIA and National Security Agency, have been overly focused on military operations and drone strikes based on the duel wars in Afghanistan and Iraq since 9/11, reports The Washington Post.

In a classified report issued last year, the secretive 14-member board, led by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, and former Democratic Sen. David L. Boren of Oklahoma, called for what is likely to be an incremental shift in intelligence resources, the Post reported.

The newspaper cited recent testimony on Capitol Hill by CIA Director John O. Brennan, who acknowledged publicly that he would reconsider the “allocation of mission” at the CIA.

Brennan, the president’s former top counterterrorism adviser, also said at that time he considered CIA involvement in lethal missions to be an “aberration” from the agency’s “traditional role,” leading some observers to speculate that the Obama administration is taking the board’s recommendations to heart.
