Chambliss: Obama Lost Without Teleprompter

By    |   Thursday, 05 Sep 2013 12:30 PM

President Barack Obama is lost when he doesn't have his words in front of him, leading him to backpedal his "crossing a red line" statement about Syria, Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss said Thursday.

"The president gets lost when he doesn't have a teleprompter in front of him," the Georgia senator said on "Fox & Friends."

"Maybe the president needs to go back and look at what he said a year ago," Chambliss said. "He was very clear. It was not Congress drawing a red line.

Urgent: Should U.S. Strike Syria? Vote Here

"He said, 'I have a red line.'"

Chambliss claimed Obama "punted the ball to Congress," when he said Saturday he would seek its approval to launch a military strike against Syria, in response to their alleged use of chemical weapons against Syrian citizens.

"Some action is necessary" to send a message to the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad on the use of chemical weapons, Chambliss maintained.

"We can't let this tyrant get away with the use of chemical weapons. It's a violation of virtually every international agreement that we've engaged in over the last several decades," he said.

"What bothers me is that we've got a president who, unlike former presidents, has failed to act the way that presidents act in times of crisis," he said.

Chambliss said Congress would have to see the final resolution before speculating on whether to endorse it, and anticipated that the narrow approval by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday could be indicative of how a final vote would transpire.

"This is not going to be an easy vote for him to be able to come out in a positive way on," Chambliss predicted.

Chambliss said that politics should not play a role for congressmen in voting on whether to launch a strike against Syria.

"Politics should not be involved. This is one of those issues ... where you just have to stand up and say, 'What's best for America?'" he said.
