The White House, responding to harsh criticism from Israeli officials regarding its ceasefire agreement in southern Syria brokered with Russia, said Monday the United States and Israel have a "shared goal" of keeping Iran out of Syria, The Times of Israel reported.

"There's a shared interest that we have with Israel, making sure that Iran does not gain a foothold, military base-wise, in southern Syria," said White House press secretary Sean Spicer at the daily press briefing.

"So, while we're going to continue those talks, obviously we want to have the productive ceasefire, but we also want to make sure that we're not – one of our other objectives obviously remains to make sure that Iran does not gain a foothold in southern Syria," he said.

"So, we need to continue to have that discussion with Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu about his concerns, but I think there is a shared goal there."

Netanyahu on Sunday told reporters he opposed the truce because it perpetuates Iranian presence in the country and the prime minister's former national security adviser Monday said the ceasefire could make an Israel-Iran war "inevitable" by the end of the Syrian civil war, according to the Washington Examiner.

"Israel should take care for its strategic goal and this is to prevent the Iranians and Hezbollah from building launching pads in Syria," Yaakov Amidror, who counseled Netanyahu from 2011 to 2013, told reporters on a conference call hosted by The Israel Project. "If [the Iranians] begin to build infrastructure which might be used against Israel in Syria and will connect this land corridor into Iraq and begin to move materials from this area into Syria, that will make the war inevitable."
