GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson credits his new lead in Iowa over national front-runner Donald Trump to his own campaign style.

Carson was interviewed by WABC Radio Host Rita Cosby on Thursday afternoon, who noted that his surge in Iowa was heavily linked to women favoring him.

When Cosby asked why Carson thinks he is more popular with women in the poll, he replied that he doesn't differentiate groups when he talks, adding, "I think everybody knows I'm going to be totally fair."

Trump has come under fire for things he has said about women, including a highly public tiff with Fox News host Megyn Kelly, in which many interpreted his words as saying she was hormonal when questioning him during the first Fox News Channel debate.

"Certainly, I think there are things that I think people might take offense at," Carson said of Trump's style when Cosby pressed him

But he said the race is a marathon, not a sprint, and while he is happy to be ahead, "it's only one poll, so I'm not going to get too excited, until I see this is a trend in a lot of different places."

Turning to the Benghazi hearings, Carson said he was surprised 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney let the issue go too easily, and Carson vowed to go after former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the issue if he wins the nomination and faces her in the general election.

"It would be a major issue," Carson said.

As for his campaign's recent request for Secret Service protection, Carson said people have been telling him for months he is in "great danger" because he is challenging secular progressive orthodoxy.

"But I also believe in the Good Lord, and we take reasonable precautions," Carson said.
