Thousands of Europeans are scrambling to score British passports before the United Kingdom leaves the European Union so they will be able to work there legally.

The Financial Times reports that 13,070 people living in the EU but outside of the UK have applied for their first British passport in 2016.

That's an increase of 35 percent on 2015 and more than double the rise between 2014 and 2015, according to the newspaper which obtained the information through a Freedom of Information request.

The statistics also reveal the largest number of passport applications came from France, some 2,369 in 2016 — 28 percent rise more than in 2015. Requests for UK passports from Germany were also high.

But as those on the continent races to get UK documentation, some Brits want out and hope to gain Irish citizenship, which will place them back in the EU.

Dublin's foreign ministry told The Financial Times the number of British citizens seeking to become Irish citizens was up two-thirds to more than 23,000 in the first three months of 2017.

Last year, the UK voted to leave the 28-nation European Union. The withdrawal process began on March 29 and is expected to be completed by April 2019.
