Rep. Steve King: Boston Bombings Should Delay Immigration Reform

By    |   Tuesday, 16 Apr 2013 03:27 PM

The deadly bombing in Boston should lead Congress to push back its immigration reform, says conservative Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa.

His comments come as law enforcement officials are investigating a Saudi national here on a student visa as a person of interest

“Some of the speculation that has come out is that yes, it was a foreign national and, speculating here, that it was potentially a person on a student visa,” King told National Review Online in an interview published Tuesday.

“If that’s the case, then we need to take a look at the big picture.”

Instead of focusing on a path to legalization for immigrants, the emphasis should now be on security, King says. “We need to be ever vigilant. ”

“We need to go far deeper into our border crossings. . . . We need to take a look at the visa-waiver program and wonder what we’re doing. If we can’t background-check people that are coming from Saudi Arabia, how do we think we are going to background-check the 11 to 20 million [undocumented] people that are here from who knows where?”

The bipartisan group of eight senators working on a comprehensive immigration overhaul released their plan Tuesday. It includes a pathway to citizenship for an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants, but only after several requirements for strengthening the border with Mexico are met.
