NYC Bombing Suspect's Father: Wife, Other Son Detained in Afghanistan

("Good Morning America")

Mohammad Rahami, the father of accused New York and New Jersey bombing suspect Ahmad Rahami, says his wife and one of his other sons are still being detained in Afghanistan after they were pulled off a Dubai flight.

"Why send my son back to Afghanistan?" Rahami said in an interview airing on ABC's "Good Morning America" about son Qassim, who was detained along with his mother for 16 hours in Dubai before sent on to his parents' native country.

He said his wife, Najiba and son were trying to return to the United States when they were detained.

"He is a U.S. citizen," Rahami said. "You have any questions? Bring him home, [don't] send him to a different country."

Rahami denied that anyone else in his family were involved in the bombings in New York City and New Jersey on Sept. 17, and told the program that he had not spoken with son Ahmad since they fell out in May.

The suspect's father said his wife left the United States in June, at about the time when the criminal complaint against Ahmad says he started buying bomb components. Also, at that time, his father said, "He did everything by himself, he buy [sic] everything by himself — order, order, he did it by himself."

He said in the interview that he had been concerned as far back as 2011 that his son had fallen in with the "wrong kind of people," and when he caught him watching jihadist videos online, he kicked him out of their house over it.

Rahami went to Pakistan and Afghanistan in 2013 and came back in 2014, and it was after that his father called the FBI to tell them they needed to watch his son, who was "not a normal person," ABC reports.

His father also denied in during the interview, recorded on Tuesday, that he had recanted his claims to the FBI about his son.

"No. It's 100 percent wrong," Mohammad said. "They [did] not do their job."

His son is still being treated in a New Jersey hospital for gunshot wounds he received in a shootout with police, and Mohammad said he spoke with his son's doctor on Monday, who reported the suspect is suffering some infections.

However, he said he wasn't told if his son was expected to survive.

He also said he wanted to apologize to the bomb victims.

"I say to everybody, 'I'm sorry, forgive me,'" he said. "I don't have any connection [to the bombing] but I still say, 'I'm sorry.'"
