Bill Nye, former host of educational children's show "Bill Nye the Science Guy," said skeptics of climate change have been "surprisingly successful" in swaying public opinion on the topic because the fossil-fuel industry has supported them.

In a CBS News interview, Nye said those who are against climate change, who he calls "deniers," are responsible for politicians' apparent lack of focus on climate change.

"The deniers have been very successful — surprisingly successful — because they are almost exclusively funded by the fossil-fuel industry," Nye said. "So this whole anti-science movement has been set up to preserve an economy that is going away. The rest of the world is moving away from fossil fuels in order to do business, but not the United States."

Nye wishes the U.S. would be a world leader in looking into renewable energy. "But the deniers have been able to influence the power brokers so successfully. The United States has hardly done anything to counteract that."

According to The Washington Times, ClimateDepot.com founder Marc Morano disputed Nye's claim about the industry, saying his "claims of skeptics being almost exclusively funded by fossil fuels are flat-out wrong. It is the environmental left that frequently enjoys amounts of fossil-fuel funding that skeptics never see."

Morano cited a report from the Science and Environmental Policy Project that showed U.S. spent more than $165 billion on climate science from fiscal year 1993 to 2013, and "the fear of climate change has distorted spending priorities in the federal government."

A Gallup poll in June, said Morano, put climate change at the bottom of the list of 2016 election issues. In contrast, a Gallup poll in March said concern about global warming among Americans is at its highest level in eight years.

Nye referenced politics in the CBS interview, pointing out the Environmental Protection Agency was founded under a Republican administration, but "somebody from that party" has called for the U.S. to continue to burn fossil fuels, apparently referring to presidential candidate Donald Trump.

"I'm not telling you for whom to vote, but please take the environment into account when you vote," Nye added. "Right now, you have somebody from the same political party that started the environmental protection industry, somebody from that party who advocates to continue to burn fossil fuels, to not have the United States participate in what everyone else in the world is doing."

The EPA was founded by the administration of Republican Richard Nixon, according to its website.

Trump has expressed his opposition to climate change. Politifact noted Trump once said climate change was a hoax created by the Chinese, but he later said he was joking.
