Democrats are leaving no stone unturned to ensure Judge Merrick B. Garland's nomination to the Supreme Court replacing conservative icon Justice Antonin Scalia, according to The New York Times.

Vice President Joe Biden will join congressional Democrats in Capitol Hill as the party aims to push for a vote on Judge Garland later Thursday. Garland, who is now the longest pending Supreme Court nominee in American history, was nominated by President Barack Obama in March.

Judge Garland is also scheduled to have a meeting with Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, a Democrat of Vermont, the report stated.

There was a constitutional showdown following which Republican senators refused to hold hearings regarding Garland's nomination.

Senate Republicans, headed by Mitch McConnell, have been firm in their decision not to allow Judge Garland's nomination. According to the senators, the decision can be taken only by the next president.

Earlier in April, when Hillary Clinton was asked about the Garland nomination, she refused to address what she called post-election "hypotheticals."

"When I am president, I will take stock of where we are and move from there," Clinton said.

On the other hand, Donald Trump has a list of 11 conservative judges he would consider as a replacement for Scalia, who died in February this year.
