Education Secretary Betsey DeVos "originally opposed" a draft of President Donald Trump's administration's plan to reverse guidelines for transgender students in public schools, CNN reports.

DeVos publicly announced her support for the guidelines, which ended the policy that allowed students to use the bathroom that corresponded with their gender identity, when they were announced on Wednesday. However, one of CNN's sources told the network that "this is not what Betsy wanted to do."

"It was the president's decision," the source said Wednesday. "When the president tells you to do something you don't want to do, that is a hard spot to be in."

In her Wednesday statement, DeVos voiced her support for the order, but added: "We have a responsibility to protect every student in America and ensure that they have the freedom to learn and thrive in a safe and trusted environment. This is not merely a federal mandate, but a moral obligation no individual, school, district or state can abdicate. At my direction, the department's Office for Civil Rights remains committed to investigating all claims of discrimination, bullying and harassment against those who are most vulnerable in our schools."

The source also said DeVos reminded Trump of their vow to protect all students, and that she thought the guidelines did not reflect this. A second source confirmed to CNN that there was disagreement between the two. The New York Times also reported DeVos' objections to the change, but that her main opponent was Attorney General Jeff Sessions. White House press secretary Sean Spicer denied any "daylight" between the president or any members of his Cabinet over the decision, according to Politico.
