A Senate panel has approved sending Republican school choice advocate Betsy DeVos' nomination for education secretary to the full Senate for a vote, although two GOP senators expressed some reservations, the Chicago Tribune reported on Tuesday.

The Health, Education, Pensions and Labor Committee voted 12-11 along partisan lines to back her nomination following a heated debate. No date has yet been set for the full Senate vote.

However, two Republicans on the committee, Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, said they remained skeptical over DeVos and are not certain they will vote for her on the Senate floor.

With a 52-seat Senate majority, the Republicans do not have much leeway if there are defections from the party concerning DeVos.

"Do note that she has not yet earned my full support," The Hill reported Murkowski as saying. "I would not advise yet that she count on my vote."

Murkowski added that "I continue to have concerns and I think that Mrs. DeVos has much to learn about our nation's public schools."

Much of this doubt centers on the question if she is qualified to oversee the country's enormous education system, because DeVos has never worked in any educational institution as an administrator or teacher, Politico reports.

That inexperience showed in her inability to answer basic questions about education in her testimony before Congress earlier this month in a confirmation hearing.

CNN also reported that DeVos appears to have lifted quotes in at least two instances in written answers submitted to the Senate committee.

However, President Donald Trump's education adviser Rob Goad called the plagiarism allegations "character assassination," explaining that "to level an accusation against her about these words included in responses to nearly 1,400 questions . . . is simply a desperate attempt to discredit Betsy DeVos."
