The congressional investigation into the 2012 attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi is officially closed now that the House committee has filed its final report, USA Today reports.

The Select Committee on Benghazi released their findings in June, but attempts to declassify other documents, including emails and interview transcripts, kept the committee active until now.

The panel's chairman, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., added the more-than 322,000-page report to the official House record to little fanfare, despite spending over $7.8 million over the last two-and-a-half years. The report, which only Republican members of the committee endorsed, slammed the military, the CIA, and President Barack Obama's administration for the response to the attack.

The ranking Democrat on the panel, Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, called the final report a "desperate rehash."

"Republicans voted on this partisan report five months ago, but delayed filing it and completing the committee until after the election," he told USA Today. "Republicans promised a process that was fair and bipartisan, but the American people got exactly the opposite."

President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering panel member Rep. Mike Pompeo to head the CIA, according to The Atlantic. Pompeo criticized the report for not faulting former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and released a supplement, along with Rep. Jim Jordan, concluding that Clinton "failed to lead" as the head of the State Department, and that the administration "misled the public" about the attack in Benghazi.
