Barrasso: Executive Action Like Pulling Pin on Hand Grenade

Sunday, 09 Nov 2014 01:41 PM

Sen. John Barrasso is warning President Barack Obama that using executive action on immigration "will hurt cooperation on every issue."

What Obama does over the next two months will set the tone for the next two years in Washington, the Wyoming Republican said on "Fox News Sunday." No one ran a Senate race based on Obama taking more executive actions, he said.

"I think it would be like the president pulling the pin out of the hand grenade and throwing it in as we're trying to actually work together," Barrasso said, adding that he hopes cooler heads at the White House will prevail on the president.

"I think he's not fully grasping the significant defeat for his party and his policies," Barrasso said of Tuesday midterm drubbing of Democrats. "As the president said, his policies were on the ballot."

Obama policies have been rejected by the voters not just because they're unpopular, but because they don't work, he said.

Barrasso told host Chris Wallace he was "astonished" that Obama hosted leaders from both parties at a White House lunch on Friday but asked them nothing about jobs, the economy, affordable energy or healthcare.

Instead, he said, Obama was so focused on the "executive amnesty" issue that he ignored having a dialogue on ways they could move forward on jobs and more.

Barrasso also said the Senate should hold off on the confirmation process for attorney general nominee Loretta Lynch until after the lame-duck session.

The job is a "very consequential position" and there hasn't been a confirmation of one in a lame-duck session since 1906, Barrasso said. The last time it was done during a change of party was 1860.

He said Lynch will have to come to the Senate and talk about how she would improve relations the departments and Congress and also will need to say whether she feels Obama's executive actions are legal.
