Bloomberg Urges Obama, Romney, on Gun Control in Wake of Aurora Shooting

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an ardent gun-control advocate, immediately jumped on the Aurora, Colo., shooting spree to demand the presidential candidates “tell us what they’re going to do about” such mass shootings.

Bloomberg’s remarks came during an interview on WOR News Talk Radio 710 in New York. “Soothing words are nice,” said Bloomberg. “But maybe it’s time the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they’re going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country. And everybody always says, Isn’t it tragic?”

Bloomberg urged the nation’s governors to speak out about the shooting. “I mean, there are so many murders with guns every day. It’s just gotta stop,” he said. “And instead of these two people, President [Barack] Obama and Gov. [Mitt] Romney talking in broad things about [how] they want to make the world a better place. OK. Tell us how. And this is a problem.

“No matter where you stand on the Second Amendment, no matter where you stand on guns, we have a right to hear from both of them, concretely, not just in generalities, specifically, What are they going to do about guns?”

Bloomberg isn’t the only politician commenting on the political repercussions of the tragedy that left 12 dead and 38 wounded.

Democratic Rep. Ed Perlmutter of Colorado, who represents the Aurora, Colo., area where the shooting occurred, told KOA 780 radio, “I don’t know why he had such easy access to guns,” a reference to suspected shooter James Holmes.

But Perlmutter said it was “premature” to consider the political fallout from the tragedy.
