Officials suspect arsonists are behind a fire that caused heavy damages to former President Bill Clinton's birthplace early Christmas morning.

"There's just evidence and signs that we do believe it was intentionally set," Hope, Arkansas Fire Department Chief Dale Glanton told CBS Affiliate KSLA in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The fire broke out at the William J. Clinton Birthplace and childhood museum  at about 3:20 a.m. Glanton said that when firefighters first arrived at the building, which is designated a National Historic Site, the back wall on the home's east side was on fire and spreading through the walls and up to the home's second floor.

The building, which is operated, staffed, and maintained by the National Parks Service, sustained extensive damages on the outside, as well as smoke and water damage.

"This is a very important structure and house inside the city of Hope," said Glanton. "It's got a lot of historical value to it and stuff here, and like I said, it's really historical piece of property in Hope...we really want to protect it and do the best job that we can do."

Other buildings, including the National Park headquarters and a gift shop, were not involved in the fire.

Clinton's grandparents had owned the historic home, and while the former president was born at Hope's Julia Chester Hospital, he spent the first four years of his life in the house.

Glanton told the television station that federal authorities will arrive to help in the investigation.
