Police have arrested a suspect in the murder of an aide to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo who was shot before the 2015 West Indian Day parade in Brooklyn, authorities said on Friday.

Micah Alleyne, 24, of the Queens borough of New York City, was arrested on Thursday and charged with murder, criminal possession of a firearm and reckless endangerment related to the death of Carey Gabay, 43. He was struck by a bullet in the head on Sept. 7 and died several days later in a Brooklyn hospital.

Alleyne was arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Friday. His attorney Edward Friedman was not immediately available to comment.

"As I have said from the beginning, we are determined to get justice for Mr. Gabay and his family," Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said in a statement. "And we will continue to press forward until we hold everyone responsible for his death accountable."

Charisma Troiano, a spokeswoman for the district attorney, declined to say whether more arrests were expected in the case.

Gabay, a Harvard-educated lawyer raised in the Bronx by Jamaican immigrant parents, served as first deputy counsel at Empire State Development, the state's chief economic development agency. He previously served as an assistant counsel for Cuomo.

Gabay was with family members in the predawn hours ahead of the annual parade, an event plagued by violence in recent years, when multiple gunshots rang out. He was believed to have been an unintended target, police previously said.

Cuomo called Gabay's death a "senseless tragedy."

"Today's arrest is a major step forward in the pursuit of justice for Carey's family and loved ones," he said in a statement on Friday.
