Alan Dershowitz: I Would Have Loved to Be Jesus' Lawyer

Lawyer and author Alan Dershowitz wishes he could go back in time and serve as the lawyer for Jesus Christ during his trial in Jerusalem.

"I would have loved to be the lawyer for Jesus!" Dershowitz told TMZ. "In front of the Sanhedrin! Imagine a Jewish lawyer winning the case for Jesus and getting him acquitted? Oh my God, he was exercising his First Amendment rights as a religious preacher."

During the impromptu man-on-the-street interview, Dershowitz was also asked about the O.J. Simpson case. Dershowitz was part of Simpson's legal team in the 1995 criminal trial that eventually saw the former football player acquitted. He had been accused of murdering his ex-wife and a waiter.

"Well, you know, we say better 10 guilty go free than one innocent be wrongly confined," Dershowitz said. "So freeing people who are widely regarded as guilty is part of our system. Convicting somebody who's innocent is not part of our system. So I think it was the right result in the case because the police tampered with evidence and in that [criminal] case the jury caught them.

"I would say that the civil result was probably right. Based on the evidence in the civil case, the fact that he was found libel, probably was the right result based on the evidence too."

The interviewer also asked Dershowitz how lawyers can "sleep at night" if they're representing a client who they know is guilty.

"We all have important jobs to do in our society, and my job is to provide the best defense I can to people, whether innocent or guilty, in order to make sure that the innocent aren't prosecuted," Dershowitz said.
