House Set for New Vote on 20-Week Abortion Ban

By    |   Wednesday, 13 May 2015 07:31 AM

House Republicans are ramping up efforts to undermine Roe v. Wade with a bill that would ban late-term abortions, The Hill reported.

The bill, which would prohibit abortion after 20 weeks, is unlikely to pass in the Senate, but Republicans are hoping that it will be a symbolic victory that could lead to an eventual ban.

"It will happen, no question. It will happen at some point," Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony List, said about banning abortions at 20 weeks, according to The Hill.

Pro-life activists compare the issue to the fight to end partial birth abortions, which was initially rejected by President Bill Clinton, but ultimately signed by President George W. Bush and upheld by the Supreme Court in 2003.

"I think this is likely to get a challenge in the court, and I think it's likely to prevail," New Jersey GOP Rep. Chris Smith, co-chairman of the Pro-Life Caucus, told The Hill.

Legislation that bans abortion after 20 weeks has been blocked by the Supreme Court in three states, but in 11 states, the laws remain in place, The Hill said.

The issue will likely surface in the 2016 presidential campaign, with Republicans attempting to advance it on the campaign trail. All the GOP candidates are united in support of a ban.

"I think there's an awakening happening," Smith said, according to The Hill. "All the Republican candidates have signaled support on this."

The bill, which has more than 100 co-sponsors, has not had a completely smooth ride through the Republican-controlled House. In January, roughly two dozen Republican female lawmakers blocked it when they found out that the legislation would restrict certain groups of rape victims from accessing abortions after 20 weeks.

The leadership has since worked to iron out the objections with a new version unveiled on Monday. It eliminates the language on rape victims, but keeps a requirement that prevents victims of incest who are 18 or older from getting a late-term abortion.

Republicans have scheduled a vote on Wednesday, which would coincide with the two-year anniversary of Dr. Kermit Gosnell's conviction for killing infants born alive during abortion procedures, The Hill reported.
