I don’t think it is going to help the credibility of the Obama administration’s promise to severely vet potential Muslim immigrants to the US. I think a majority of Americans think the vetting will get the usual lick-and-a-promise performance that characterizes other federal immigration quality control.

This time we learn from ABC News the Dept. of Homeland Security “granted citizenship to at least 858 immigrants who had pending deportation orders from countries of concern to national security or with high rates of immigration fraud.”

But wait, there’s more! “DHS officials identified an additional 953 people who had been naturalized despite outstanding deportation orders.”

The excuse for the first batch was the criminals used false names and birth dates to conceal their identity and weren’t caught because their fingerprints were missing from government databases. The feds don’t know if the larger batch was naturalized due to missing fingerprints or just garden-variety federal incompetence.

The exact reason is immaterial, because the underlying cause is simple government worker don’t-give-a-damn thinking. According to the report, “The government has known about the [fingerprint] gap and its impact on naturalization decisions since at least 2008 when a Customs and Border Protection official identified 206 immigrants who used a different name or other biographical information to gain citizenship or other immigration benefits, though few cases have been investigated.”

So ICE and now DHS has had eight years to fix a national security problem and they’ve done nothing. Now do you know why a majority of Americans support Donald Trump’s call to pause immigration from Muslim countries until “we know what’s going on”?

Even when ICE functionaries discover a case of citizenship fraud, the cases don’t go anywhere because federal prosecutors “generally did not accept immigration benefits fraud cases."

Which means citizenship fraud is another one of those victimless crimes we hear so much about, since the only segment of the population that pays is the taxpayer.

And just to show how backward federal bureaucrats think, three of the fraudulent citizens then applied for and were granted aviation and transportation worker credentials. These documents give them access to secure areas in airports and other transportation hubs.

DHS is proud of themselves because “credentials were revoked after they were identified as having been granted citizenship improperly,” but they still keep the citizenship!

DHS recommends that all these cases be “evaluated” by officials. What should happen is every one of the citizenships should be revoked first, and then officials can evaluate the cases if the applicants want to continue.

The chances for that happening — infinitesimal.
